We send our students to school with the goal of learning and being safe. But less than a month into the school year multiple fights have occurred. The common lunch room fights really need to not be common.
There has been a major incident at Vines High School. We have seen the video, and we have decided to not further circulate in order to protect the victim. If you see the video, you will be aghast. It was a physical beating of a girl by a boy! The boy rained punches upon punches on the girl. He continued while she was on the ground.
According to parents who spoke about this incident at the October 3, 2023 School Board Meeting, indications are that tragically the girl was severely injured, she is not back in school, and Plano ISD staff have been silent in responding about the incident which, according to one of the parents, involved a student who has a history of violence.
Watch those parents speak to Superintendent Williams, Plano ISD leadership, and our elected Trustees:

Were parents notified? No, there was no communication via email, phone tree, or text to prepare parents for the brutality some of their children had witnessed that day.
Do the parents have any information on the measures that will now be employed to prevent a future incident? No, not even after that Board Meeting was communication relayed to parents about this incident.
Is Plano ISD going to continue to institute the weak restorative practices protocol which arguably had already failed to restore this offender multiple times? Most likely.
This protocol does not want to punish. Until recently, Plano ISD had two alternative schools. Since the closing of Bird Special Programs Center, Plano ISD is now left with only one alternative school for a district of 48,000 students: Guinn Special Programs Center. Why? To protect the feelings of the students who misbehave? How will we protect the students? How will Plano ISD level up the safety of our students? Recently elected Trustee Michael Cook stated that student punishment in Plano iSD is generally too harsh. I guess violence is in the eye of the beholder.
If there are no consequences or weak consequences for violent behavior, then no one is safe: Students, Teachers nor Staff.
