Community Scrutinizes Plano ISD Library Content

The issue of sexually explicit content found in books on Plano ISD campuses continues. At the Plano ISD Board Meeting on October 3, 2023, 19 speakers signed up to speak, with all but 3 speaking about these books.

Unlike public commenters at school board meetings across the country, these parents, residents, and community members took a different approach: they read aloud and commented on books that had recently been through the Plano ISD challenge/reconsideration process and deemed acceptable by Plano ISD to remain in schools. This removes any argument that Plano ISD has inadvertently permitted a sexually explicit book onto library shelves.

On page 8 of Plano ISD’s 2023-2024 Student Code of Conduct, under General Conduct Violations it states:

“Students shall not possess or use…Pornographic material”

Plano ISD Student Code of Conduct, 2023-2024

Moreover, as a parent mentioned during comments at this Board Meeting, under Texas Penal Code, Section 43.24 it is a punishable offense to distribute this type of material. This would seem to include a student taking a photo of sexually explicit content in a Plano ISD library book and sending it to another student.

It would appear Plano ISD is luring students into committing punishable offenses by making these questionable books available for students to possess. Perhaps this would be an opportunity for Plano ISD parents to teach their children the meaning of entrapment.
