Plano Student Walkout

In the past week, students in Plano ISD schools have participated in walkouts where they rally, chant, and protest, all during instructional class time and with campus and district administrators’ prior knowledge and approval.

More such events are reported to be occurring this week at various Plano ISD campuses.

Before these walkouts, Administration will notify campus staff that these walkouts will be occurring, specifying the date and time, giving staff an opportunity to plan accordingly.

Before these walkouts, Administration will notify Plano Police Department and even increase police presence on campus, giving them an opportunity to plan accordingly.

However, before these walkouts, Administration will not notify parents of students on these campuses, removing from parents an opportunity to plan accordingly. Some parents want to keep their children home for safety, some want to be able to discuss ahead of time the nature of this walkout, others want their children to remain in class and not miss instructional time.

Increased police presence for these events would seem to indicate concern that these events may not be peaceful or safe.

This is not the first time there have been walkouts at Plano ISD approved by Administration to occur during instructional time and without parents being notified ahead of time.

Many parents are rightfully asking Plano ISD:

  • Why isn’t Plano ISD notifying parents of these events ahead of time, especially when there is concern for student safety?
  • Why is Plano ISD approving these events during instructional time?
  • How is Plano ISD marking the absences for students who participate in these walkouts during instructional time?

These are questions only the Superintendent and Board of Trustees can answer. Will they?
