What is happening with the Plano ISD General Counsel position? Is Plano ISD in so much legal trouble that it needs multiple attorneys on staff in addition to the outside counsel it retains?

At the May 16, 2023 School Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved 6 law firms to provide legal counsel to the District.

At the October 3, 2023 meeting, the Board approved Danny Stockton, an attorney, for Chief of Staff.

In addition, Plano ISD employs Liz Tycom, a legal specialist.

As though that’s not enough legal assistance, Plano ISD continues to seek more legal support with its latest job posting for internal General Counsel.

Twice now the General Counsel position has come for a vote during a School Board Meeting, and each time, just before the vote, it has been removed from the agenda at the request of Plano ISD Administration.

Are the candidates having last-minute cold feet with Plano ISD and withdrawing their application just before they are supposed to be installed? Are Plano ISD Administration and Trustees questioning whether another six-figure salary, administrative position is fiscally responsible of them?

A little background on this position that was posted 149 days ago…

On September 28, 2023, a job posting was made for an administrative position of General Counsel at the Plano ISD central office.

At the November 8, 2023 Board Meeting, the Board’s agenda indicated that the position had been filled per item 8.23 “Approval of the Administrative Appointment of General Counsel”. However, when that item came up for a vote, it was removed.

Three months later, at the February 13, 2024 Board Meeting, the Board’s agenda indicated that once again the position had been filled per item 7.9 “Approval of the Administrative Appointment for the Position of General Counsel”. However, when that item came up for a vote, it was also removed.

We are in no hurry to continue adding these expensive, administrative positions in a shrinking school district, but we can’t help but wonder what is really going on.
